The Bulgarian School in Boston and Cape Cod will once again hold a Christmas campaign this year, aimed at raising funds for groups in need in Bulgaria. The goal of the campaign is to build another bridge connecting us with our homeland, to reciprocate the funds that Bulgaria sends to our school, and to set an example of empathy and humanity for our children.
This year, the Board of Directors voted to approve the Bulgarian foundation “Teach For Bulgaria” as the recipient of the funds. For nearly 15 years, Teach For Bulgaria has been working to transform education across the country. Their programs empower teachers and school teams to unlock their potential and create environments where every child can thrive.
From day one, Teach For Bulgaria took on what many considered "mission impossible": recruiting the brightest and most talented professionals and convincing them to become teachers. But not just anywhere - in the most challenging schools: those with low performance metrics, in small communities, and with children whose families don't prioritize education. Over the years, the foundation's vision grew even bigger: to train entire school teams across the country and revolutionize Bulgarian education. This dream gave birth to their newest initiative - "Model Schools" - made possible through the generosity of their donors.
The results from the 140 + schools that took part in the "Model Schools" program shine as beacons of hope against troubling trends in Bulgarian education - rising functional illiteracy (now over 50%), lack of focus on 21st-century skills, and outdated teaching methods that don't connect with today's students.
While education challenges are serious, the impact of these efforts is exponential. Bulgarian teachers pour their hearts into their work, and most are eager to learn and try new approaches to unlock each student's potential. What they need are programs like "Model Schools." The results the team sees in partner schools, coupled with growing community support, drive them to set and achieve increasingly ambitious goals.
This year, the Bulgarian school in Boston and Cape Cod is dreaming of a larger building of its own and is participating in a united campaign to expand its current building in the suburbs of Boston. However, our school is not forgetting Bulgaria! Through our platform, the school has chosen to promote the Bulgarian foundation “Teach for Bulgaria” and to involve its students in donation projects. During November and December, students will be creating Christmas cards and projects to help raise funds. Additionally, during the Christmas concerts at both branches, dedicated donation boxes with the inscription "Donate to Teach for Bulgaria" will be available.
We invite you to learn more about the Teach for Bulgaria Foundation and support our students in their efforts to provide a better education for children in Bulgaria!
